Outstanding collection features

Of special international importance are the bird collection from the 19th and 20th century, the Pleistocene mammal bones from caves in the Harz mountains and the collections of recent and fossil reptiles (dinosaurs, ichthyosaurs) from the 20th and 21th century. These collections include numerous type-specimens, currently a new dinosaur and a new ichthyosaur.
