LITHOLOGICAL DESCRIPTIONS Helsen & Lie, 1998
The following lithostratigraphic overview in bases on descripitions from
both Doel- 1a and Doel 1b wells. Depths refer, obviously, to the Doel 1b
where the are measured from the drilling table (39cm above the concrete
floor).
Fill Material (not in situ) (00.00 03.00)
Grey brown clayey fine SAND. Quartz grains subangular subrounded.
Accessories: bivalves, gastropods, mica, glauconite (3%).
Quaternary (03.00 13.00)
Dark grey brown to very dark grey brown sandy CLAY and clayey SAND. Quartz
grains fine and subangular. Organic matter (wood and peat). Accessories:
pyrite, limonite, mica, reworked glauconite.
Pliocene
Lillo Formation (13.00 30.00)
Grey brown to green grey clayey fine SAND. Quartz grains subangular-
subrounded, coatings.
Accessories: bivalves, gastropods, mica, glauconite (2-3%).
Kattendijk Formation (30.00 42.00)
Green grey fine to medium-grained slightly clayey SAND, Quartz grains
subangular to subrounded, some argillaceous coatings. Glauconite content
increasing towards the base (5-25%). Accessories: mica, abundant bivalves
and gastropods.
Miocene
Berchem Formation (42.00 - 53.00)
Very dark green fine-medium clayey SAND. Quartz grains subangular to
subrounded, some argillaceous coatings, Glauconite content varying between
80 and 40%. Accessories: vertebrate remains, abundant bivalves and
gastropods. Fine gravel consisting of flint, quartzite and phosphate at the
base of the unit.
Oligocvene
Boom Formation (53.00-120.00)
Green grey fine sandy and plastic CLAY and SILT. Accessories: traces of
mica, pyrite and occasionally glauconite. Sand and silt content increasing
towards the base.
EOCENE
Niel and Zelzate Formations (120.00-174.00)
Grey fine SAND and SILT. Accessories: traces of glauconite, mica and
glauconite. Pieces of calcareous sandstone, oyster beds (Ostrea) and
occasional pyritised worm casts.
Maldegem Formation (Wemmel Member excl.) (174.00-221.00)
Green grey fine sandy CLAY, Sand is fine to very fine-grained. Occasional
pieces of calcareous sandstone. Accessories: traces of glauconite, pyrite
and mica. Oyster beds, worm casts and foraminifers.
Wemmel Member, Lede and Brussel Formations (221.00 242.00)
Green grey fine clayey SAND and sandy CLAY. Some medium-coarse quartz
grains. Argillaceous and slightly calcareous coatings around quartz grains.
Lenses of clay. Glauconite (2-3%) and traces of mica. Pieces of calcareous
sandstone. Vivalves.
Tielt Formation (Kortemarkt Member 316.00-347.00)
Green grey clayey SILT and silty CLAY with lenses of fine to very fine
SAND. Minute worm casts, traces of glauconite, mica and pyrite. Green grey
soft CLAY with small lenses of fine-grained SAND.
Kortrijk Formation (Aalbeke Member 347.00-353.00)
Green grey soft CLAY, with small lenses of fine-grained SAND
Kortrijk Formation (Moen Member, 353.00-390.00)
Alternation of grey to green calyey silt, silty CLAY and stiff CLAY,
conchoidal fractures of clay common. Lenses of fine to very fine SAND,
often within small bioturbations (worm casts). Accessories: traces of mica,
pyrite (occasionally as nodules) and glauconite in the coarser beds.
Bivalve shells (Amusium) at various depths.
Kortrijk Formation (St. Maur Member: 390.00 440.00)
Alternation of grey to green grey clayey SILT, silty CLAY and stiff CLAY.
Conchoidal fractures of clay common. Lenses of fine to very fine SAND,
often within small bioturbations (worm casts). Accessories traces of mica,
pyrite and glauconite in the coarser beds. Rare gastropods (Turritella).
Towards the base the clay becomes dark grey
Kortrijk Formation (equivalent Mt. Héribu Member; 440.00 441.00)
